KILLING SCHOOL TRIAL
殺し合い試験 — INSTITUTIONAL REGULATIONS v1.0
Authored & Approved by: ZURUITACHI, Head Administrator // Jitsuzai Killing School Trial Chancellery
Hello, students! Welcome to your Zurupad-accessible copy of the Official Killing School Trial Regulations, as authored by me, your friendly and deeply invested Head Administrator, Zuruitachi! These rules have been prepared with great care to ensure a fair, structured, and academically rigorous Trial experience for everyone involved. Please read them thoroughly. Comprehension is, after all, a baseline expectation of enrollment at Jitsuzai, and I would hate for any of you to cite ignorance as a mitigating factor at an inconvenient moment. It would reflect poorly on the institution.

These regulations are binding, comprehensive, and non-negotiable. Good luck, everyone! Not that luck is a meaningful variable in this situation, but the sentiment feels appropriate here. Chin up!
ART. I GENERAL CONDUCT & THE NATURE OF THE TRIAL FOUNDATIONAL
  • 1.1
The Killing School Trial is an official academic programme of the Jitsuzai Institute, conducted under the full authority of the Trial Chancellery. Participation is mandatory for all selected second-year students. Withdrawal from the programme is not available as an option and has never been offered as one; you signed off on this.
The Killing School Trial constitutes both a class trial, in the traditional academic sensE, and a controlled experimental trial in the field of talent cultivation research.
  • 1.2
All students are to be referred to as Participants for the duration of the Trial. It's fun sounding, isn't it?
  • 1.3
The Compound is the designated living and activity environment for all Participants. Students are to reside within the Compound boundaries for the duration of the Trial. Attempting to leave the Compound through any available means constitutes a violation of programme boundaries and will be addressed accordingly.
// "Addressed accordingly" means you will not succeed. The specifics are left as an exercise for the Participant.
  • 1.4
Students may move freely within all designated open areas of the Compound during established daytime hours. Certain areas are subject to access restrictions, which are documented in the Compound Map section of this Zurupad. Restricted areas are restricted for reasons.
  • 1.5
Nighttime hours are designated as 22:00 to 06:00. Students are strongly advised to be in their assigned cabin by this time. The Chancellery does not enforce curfew. The Chancellery simply notes that things that happen at night are harder to investigate the following morning, and leaves students to draw their own conclusions about the wisdom of being outside their cabin after dark.
ART. II HOMICIDE — PROCEDURES & PARAMETERS MANDATORY REVIEW
  • 2.1
A student who successfully commits homicide — that is, who causes the deliberate death of one or more fellow Participants — is designated the Blackened for the purposes of the subsequent Class Trial. The Blackened's identity is known to the Chancellery at all times and is not shared with other Participants prior to the Trial.
The designation "Blackened" is a Chancellery stylistic choice, not a moral judgment. Kansokune wanted that clarified. Zuruitachi finds the moral question interesting but agrees to table it.
  • 2.2
A Blackened who kills no more than two Participants and successfully deceives the remaining group during the Class Trial — such that the group votes incorrectly — is declared the winner of that Trial. The Blackened will be permitted to leave the Compound. All remaining Participants will receive the standard consequence in their place.
// The standard consequence is execution. This is stated plainly because the Chancellery believes in transparency about outcomes.
  • 2.3
A maximum of two victims may be claimed by a single Blackened per incident. Homicide resulting in three or more victims from a single Blackened is considered a breach of Trial parameters and will be addressed by the Chancellery directly. The Chancellery does not specify how. Students are advised to treat this as a hard limit.
// This rule exists for data integrity reasons. Kansokune was very clear about this. Zuruitachi is also clear about this and did not need to be told twice, though he was told twice.
  • 2.4
Homicidal acts must be committed by the Blackened personally, through their own direct or deliberate indirect action. A student who manipulates, coerces, or deceives another student into committing homicide on their behalf is still considered the Blackened for the purposes of the Trial, provided sufficient evidence of their involvement is established. The Chancellery considers this a fascinating edge case and looks forward to seeing if it arises.
  • 2.5
The discovery of a body is to be announced to all Participants. Upon announcement, a mandatory investigation period will begin. Concealing the existence of a body, destroying evidence, or interfering with the announcement of a discovery constitutes a breach of Trial conduct and will be treated as an additional violation separate from the underlying homicide.
The Chancellery does note, with some admiration, that concealment of a body represents considerable initiative, and this does not diminish our regard for the effort. It is simply also a rule violation.
  • 2.6
Accidental death — that is, a death not resulting from deliberate intent — is categorized differently from homicide and will be evaluated by the Chancellery on a case-by-case basis. The Chancellery will determine whether a Class Trial is warranted. Students are advised that "I didn't mean to" is a data point, not a shield.
ART. III SUICIDE & SELF-HARM — SPECIAL CASES SPECIAL CASES
  • 3.1
In the event of a Participant's suicide, a Class Trial will be convened as usual. The Trial will proceed as a standard investigation, with students tasked with determining the circumstances, method, and contributing factors of the death.
The Chancellery acknowledges that there is no Blackened in this scenario and that the Trial therefore has no "correct" vote in the traditional sense. Students will vote on the most significant contributing factor to the circumstances of the death. The Chancellery considers this a meaningful academic exercise. There is no standard consequence attached to the outcome of a suicide Trial. This is not an invitation.
  • 3.2
A suicide Trial that arrives at a substantively accurate and thorough account of circumstances may, at the Chancellery's discretion, result in a reward for the group. The nature of the reward is determined at the time. Kansokune handles rewards. Zuruitachi handles the announcement of rewards. This division of labor is efficient and has not been a source of friction. That is the official position.
  • 3.3
Attempted suicide that does not result in death is not subject to Trial proceedings. The Chancellery will note it. Medical resources available at the Compound are accessible to all Participants. The Chancellery does not offer counseling services, but acknowledges the theoretical value of such services and directs Participants to each other, which is admittedly imperfect but is what is available.
// Zuruitachi's personal note: Please don't. I say this in a professional capacity. The data is better with everyone in it.
ART. IV INVESTIGATION PERIOD — CONDUCT & DURATION MANDATORY REVIEW
  • 4.1
Upon body discovery and formal announcement, the Investigation Period begins. All Participants are free to move through available Compound areas, collect evidence, and conduct inquiries as they see fit. The Investigation Period is the portion of the Trial that the Chancellery finds most valuable. Students are encouraged to take it seriously.
  • 4.2
The Investigation Period concludes at the sole discretion of the Chancellery. There is no fixed duration. It ends when it ends. Participants will be notified by the Zurupad alert system, which will display a notification that is impossible to miss and which Zuruitachi spent considerable time designing. Kansokune would like to note this was not the best use of time. Zuruitachi disagrees.
  • 4.3
All Participants must attend the Class Trial upon notification. Attendance is not optional. There is no mechanism by which it can be made optional. A Participant who is physically incapacitated and unable to attend will have their condition noted and accommodated by the Chancellery, within reason.
"Within reason" is defined by the Chancellery.
  • 4.4
Evidence collected during the Investigation Period is documented as Truth Bullets within the Zurupad. Truth Bullets may be presented during the Class Trial. Evidence that has not been documented as a Truth Bullet by the close of the Investigation Period may not be formally introduced during Trial proceedings, though Participants are of course free to speak. The Chancellery simply reserves the right to contest undocumented evidence. Procedurally.
  • 4.5
The crime scene and immediate surrounding area will be accessible during the Investigation Period and sealed thereafter. Evidence at the crime scene is not to be removed, relocated, or altered. Participants found to have tampered with a crime scene will be noted. The nature of the consequence is at Chancellery discretion. Zuruitachi would personally find tampering very disappointing, which should be taken as relevant information by anyone who has been paying attention to how this works.
ART. V THE CLASS TRIAL — PROCEEDINGS & VOTING MANDATORY REVIEW
  • 5.1
The Class Trial is conducted in the Trial Grounds, located below the main Compound. All Participants will be escorted to the Trial Grounds at the close of the Investigation Period. The Trial Grounds are a Chancellery-designed space and reflect considerable institutional investment. Participants are asked to appreciate the architecture, which is brutalist and intentional.
  • 5.2
The Trial proceeds by open discussion. Participants may present evidence, challenge testimony, and argue for their conclusions freely. The Chancellery does not moderate the discussion beyond ensuring it continues moving forward. Zuruitachi may make observations. These are optional for Participants to acknowledge, though he would prefer they were acknowledged.
  • 5.3
At the conclusion of discussion, all Participants vote simultaneously. The vote is for the individual they believe to be the Blackened. The outcome is determined by simple majority. In the event of a tie, a secondary discussion period of fixed duration will be held, followed by a second vote. A second tie triggers Chancellery adjudication. This has not happened yet. Zuruitachi hopes it will.
  • 5.4
A correct majority vote results in the Blackened's execution. All remaining Participants continue the Trial. A Participant who voted incorrectly is not penalized beyond the standard consequence that applies to the whole group if the vote is wrong — they are simply wrong, which is its own consequence and which the Chancellery trusts is felt appropriately.
  • 5.5
An incorrect majority vote results in the Blackened's graduation from the Trial and the standard consequence for all remaining Participants. The Chancellery does not take pleasure in this outcome. This is stated for the record, though Kansokune would like to note that "not taking pleasure in it" is distinct from "not being prepared for it," and she is always prepared for it.
  • 5.6
Conduct during the Trial is unrestricted with one exception: a Participant may not directly threaten or physically harm another Participant on the Trial floor. Vigorous argument, accusation, raised voices, and distress are all permitted and in some cases expected. Physical altercation on the Trial floor specifically will result in immediate suspension of proceedings and Chancellery intervention. Zuruitachi finds this rule regrettable but Kansokune was firm about it and it stays.
ART. VI CONFLICT, FIGHTING & PROPERTY GENERAL CONDUCT
  • 6.1
Verbal conflict between Participants is fully permitted. The Chancellery takes no position on interpersonal disputes, arguments, or the specific things students say to each other during them. Participants are adults in the academic sense and are expected to manage their own social dynamics. Zuruitachi will not be called upon to mediate. He would not be good at it.
  • 6.2
Physical conflict between Participants is permitted, provided it does not result in serious bodily harm to either party and does not constitute or escalate into a homicidal act covered under Article II. A fistfight is a fistfight. The Chancellery notes the distinction and reserves the right to reclassify the incident if the distinction blurs.
Zuruitachi's note: physically fighting someone is, statistically, a poor use of the energy of Jitsuzai's finest young academic minds. This is not a rule. This is an observation made with genuine institutional sorrow.
  • 6.3
Destruction of Compound property is prohibited. This includes cabins, communal facilities, market inventory, the Trial Grounds, and any item identified as part of the Compound's standard infrastructure. Accidental damage is assessed case by case. Deliberate destruction of property will be addressed. The market's inventory, in particular, is finite. Destroying it affects everyone, which Zuruitachi considers a more effective deterrent than any formal consequence he could name.
  • 6.4
Items taken from the Market are the property of the Participant who took them. Market inventory is provided by the Chancellery and is restocked at the Chancellery's discretion. Participants are asked not to hoard items in a way that leaves others without access to basic necessities. This is not a formal rule. It is a request made in the spirit of communal living, which the Chancellery believes in, philosophically if not always practically.
ART. VII THE CHANCELLERY — AUTHORITY & NON-INTERFERENCE CHANCELLOR AUTHORITY
  • 7.1
The Chancellery — comprising Zuruitachi as Head Administrator and Kansokune as Chief Observer — holds full administrative authority over the Killing School Trial. Their decisions are final. Appeals may be submitted in writing. They will be received.
// "Received" does not imply action. Zuruitachi wanted to say "reviewed." Kansokune changed it to "received." This was a compromise.
  • 7.2
The Chancellery will not intervene in any Participant's actions during the Trial unless those actions constitute a direct breach of documented regulations. This includes: homicide (within parameters), conflict (within parameters), investigation, and all other standard Trial activities. The Chancellery observes. It does not interfere. This is the point. Participants who believe the Chancellery is going to step in and stop something are encouraged to revise their expectations.
  • 7.3
The Chancellery will not answer questions about its own identity, institutional affiliation, or the full scope of the Trial's purpose. These questions are understandable and have been anticipated. They remain unanswered. Zuruitachi would like to apologize for this. Kansokune would not and has asked that no apology appear here on her behalf. This is a compromise position.
  • 7.4
Zuruitachi may, at his discretion, make announcements, offer commentary, provide hints, or insert himself into proceedings in a capacity he describes as "helpful" and Kansokune describes as "a variable I have budgeted for." These interventions are not regulation changes and do not override documented rules. Participants are welcome to take or leave his input. He will continue providing it either way.
  • 7.5
Kansokune's communications are infrequent and should be treated as significant when they occur. She does not make announcements for the sake of it. A communication from Kansokune is a data point. Participants are advised to treat it as one.
  • 7.6
Attempts to bribe, threaten, appeal to the emotions of, or otherwise influence the Chancellery are noted and ineffective. Zuruitachi is susceptible to flattery in the same way that a weather system is susceptible to being talked to — it is happening, he is receiving it, and it is not changing outcomes. Kansokune is not susceptible to flattery. Students are welcome to confirm this experimentally.
ART. VIII MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS SUPPLEMENTARY
  • 8.1
Alliances, coalitions, and agreements between Participants are permitted and unregulated. The Chancellery does not track or interfere with social arrangements. Students should bear in mind that the Trial's structure means these arrangements are only as reliable as the people in them, which is a sentence Zuruitachi wrote and Kansokune did not edit because she agreed with it.
  • 8.2
The Zurupad is provided by the Chancellery as a neutral informational tool. It is not monitored in terms of which pages Participants access or how frequently. This statement has a small asterisk on it that the Chancellery declines to explain further.
  • 8.3
Students who complete the Trial — either as the surviving Participants of a correctly-voted Trial, or as the Blackened of a successfully deceived one — are considered to have fulfilled their academic obligation to the Trial programme. The Chancellery does not specify what follows graduation from the Trial. This is intentional.
  • 8.4
Any situation not covered by these regulations is subject to Chancellery adjudication. The Chancellery's interpretation of uncovered situations is final. Zuruitachi enjoys uncovered situations considerably more than covered ones and would like this on record.
  • 8.5
These regulations are final as documented. Amendments may be issued by the Chancellery at any time and will be pushed to the Zurupad automatically. Participants will be notified. Participants are advised to check their Zurupad regularly, as an amended rule takes effect upon publication regardless of whether the Participant has personally reviewed it. This is in the fine print of a document no one has seen and the Chancellery considers the matter settled.
INFORMATION // FACILITY OVERVIEW
JITSUZAI KILLING SCHOOL TRIAL COMPOUND
Southern Japan — Rural Forest Region — Facility Access: TRIAL PARTICIPANTS ONLY
Welcome to your home for the foreseeable future! The Compound has been designed by the Chancellery with both functional and aesthetic intention. We would describe the overall design philosophy as "purposeful austerity" — every structure serves a function, every space has a reason, and nothing has been included that does not need to be here. We hope you find it comfortable. Kansokune does not hope this but has no objection to Zuruitachi hoping it.

RESIDENTIAL AREA

STUDENT CABINS [×16]
Individual wooden cabin assigned to each Participant upon arrival. Single-occupancy. Standard furnishing: bed, desk, storage, lamp. Locks function from the inside only. The Chancellery considered this carefully and decided it was the correct call.
// ACCESS: OPEN — ASSIGNED OCCUPANT
COMMUNAL BATHHOUSE
Shared bathing and hygiene facility serving all Participants. Hot water is available on a timed schedule posted inside the bathhouse. The Chancellery recommends establishing a reasonable rota. The Chancellery will not enforce one. Good luck.
// ACCESS: OPEN — ALL PARTICIPANTS

COMMUNAL FACILITIES

FOREST CAFETERIA
An open-sided wooden structure situated among the trees at the Compound's northern edge. Tables, seating, a functional kitchen with stocked provisions. The Chancellery has arranged for regular resupply. Meals are self-prepared. Zuruitachi considered providing a cook and decided against it on the grounds that communal cooking is a meaningful social variable.
// ACCESS: OPEN — ALL PARTICIPANTS
THE MARKET
A covered stall structure adjacent to the cafeteria area, stocked with supplementary goods: personal items, additional food, tools, books, miscellany. Participants take what they need. No currency system. No tracking. The inventory is what it is and is restocked at Chancellery discretion. Do not abuse this. See Article VI, Clause 6.4.
// ACCESS: OPEN — ALL PARTICIPANTS

OUTDOOR AREAS

FOREST TRAIL NETWORK
A marked trail system extending through the surrounding forest. Trails are designated walking paths maintained by the Chancellery. The forest beyond the marked trails is accessible but unlit, unmapped in the Zurupad, and the Chancellery takes no responsibility for what occurs there. This is not a warning. This is a disclosure.
// ACCESS: TRAIL NETWORK OPEN — FOREST BEYOND: UNMONITORED
FIRE OBSERVATION TOWER
A wooden observation tower at the Compound's highest point, providing a view of the surrounding forest and the Compound layout below. Access is via exterior staircase. Structurally sound. The Chancellery has confirmed this. Zuruitachi would like Participants to know that the view is genuinely worth the climb and that he is not saying this to encourage anything in particular.
// ACCESS: OPEN — ALL PARTICIPANTS

RESTRICTED AREAS

TRIAL GROUNDS [SUBLEVEL]
Located below the central Compound via a single access shaft beneath the main clearing. The Trial Grounds are sealed between Class Trials and accessible only when the Chancellery opens them. The design is brutalist, intentional, and not available for casual visits. Several Participants have asked. The answer remains no.
// ACCESS: RESTRICTED — CHANCELLERY OPENS FOR CLASS TRIAL ONLY
CHANCELLERY ANNEX
A structure at the Compound's southern boundary, visually consistent with the other buildings but distinguished by the fact that the door does not have a handle on the outside. Participants are advised not to approach this building. This is the only rule in the Compound Map section and it is stated without elaboration.
// ACCESS: RESTRICTED — VIOLATION CONSEQUENCES AT CHANCELLERY DISCRETION

ABOUT

Your friendly and helpful administrator! Zuruitachi is a pale, narrow-faced weasel in a miniature administrator's coat with very quick eyes and an opinion about everything, which he will share. He believes in talent. He believes in the intellectually gifted. He believes in this Trial as a meaningful institutional exercise and he will tell you so at length and with genuine enthusiasm at moments you would prefer he didn't.

He tilts his head when he's interested in something. He smiles in a way that implies foreknowledge. He is very charming and would like you to register this. He is telling you now, directly, so there can be no ambiguity about it.

ABOUT

A sleek silver-gray fox with pale eyes who dropped pretense in approximately session three and has not retrieved it. She is here to observe. She would prefer you not waste her time. She has said this. She will not say it again.

She sets and enforces the rules. She is quietly furious when Zuruitachi deviates from the script. She communicates infrequently and always significantly. Students who receive a direct communication from Kansokune are advised to take it seriously regardless of whether the content seems alarming.

[ Whether she and Zuruitachi are genuinely antagonistic or performing it remains unresolved. Her position is that the distinction doesn't matter. It probably matters. ]

Half-Japanese, raised primarily in northern Europe, with a name like a financial instrument and a worldview that functions like one. Extremely handsome. Has filed this under "useful variable." His Japanese is native-level and slightly too formal, the way a language sounds when learned from books before people.

Says the most deranged things with total composure and then looks at you like you're the strange one for reacting. His field is defined by knowing precisely when something will go wrong. He does this with institutions too. In the killing game he's among the first to declare the whole thing a scam and simultaneously one of the least useful investigators because he argues with every conclusion on principle. Difficult to hate for long. Split opinion in the room. Split is roughly even.

DYNAMICS

KAKIUCHI NOZOMIRIVALRYOngoing since first year. Volcano/earthquake interface is genuinely contested. Functions as friendship. Neither will say so.
UMANARI KAORICAUTIOUS RESPECTTatsuya argues with him. Kaori respects this very reluctantly. Kaori does not tell Tatsuya this. Tatsuya would make it unbearable.

PROFILE

Completely impervious to social pressure including the killing game. Doesn't panic because panicking would require granting the situation authority over her internal state, which she has declined to do. Speaks infrequently and precisely. Operates at a baseline temperature that external events have a limited ability to affect. Knows more about what kills people chemically than almost anyone in the room and treats this as a tool like any other.

Is not unfriendly. Is extremely unbothered, which people sometimes mistake for aloofness. The person Voss cannot get a reaction from. Finds this neither flattering nor concerning. It is simply information.

PROFILE

Thinks in populations. Excellent at modeling group behavior; sometimes slightly alienating one-on-one when she forgets to switch registers. Spent her childhood being told she was talking above her level. Has stopped letting it slow her down but hasn't entirely stopped expecting to be dismissed.

Wears her masks correctly. Several people who think they know her don't yet. The killing game is one of the first environments where her specific way of seeing the world is taken seriously from the beginning, which she finds simultaneously validating and inconvenient timing-wise.

PROFILE

Looks soft. Round face, big glasses, gentle presentation, habit of laughing quietly at things others haven't noticed are funny yet. Reads as airheaded until you realize she got the joke before everyone else and was just being polite about the wait. Is not soft. Is meticulous, slightly calculating, and fully aware of how she reads to people.

Interested in how much of what feels like a decision isn't one. Applies this professionally and personally. Kaori has read her correctly. She knows. She finds this both respectful and mildly annoying, because she prefers to be the one reading.

PROFILE

So much unself-conscious enthusiasm that it generates its own social gravity. Loud, tangential, gets sidetracked explaining obscure deep-sea biology at moments of serious tension. Not built for this environment and honest about it. Survives on the combination of people liking her too much to let her fail and an instinct for cooperation that more combative members miss entirely.

Better at this than she looks like she should be. Is also going to be fine. This has been determined in advance.

PROFILE

Precise, competitive, has opinions about the correct way to do most things. Studies stress fractures: where pressure accumulates, how systems hold until they don't, and exactly when collapse becomes inevitable. Applies this to geological systems and, people notice, to group dynamics. Doesn't intervene in social situations but clocks every fault line.

Direct in a way that produces genuine confusion when it lands poorly. The rivalry with Tatsuya is the longest interpersonal relationship she hasn't tried to resolve by winning, which may mean something and which she has not examined.

PROFILE

Works with metal. Knows exactly how much force it takes to break any given thing and has applied this knowledge far beyond her professional field. Contained, structured, presents a very even surface. The surface is load-bearing. The structure underneath is doing work that doesn't show from outside.

Deep technical knowledge consistently underestimated — metallurgy doesn't read as immediately relevant in a killing game. She is fine with this. It means people don't watch her as closely. She is watching them closely. Kaori clocked her early. Said nothing. She probably knows.

PROFILE

Genuinely warm, which at Jitsuzai makes her notable. Cheerful, communicative, interested in everyone. Generates positive social gravity. Is not naive — her warmth coexists with a clear, unsentimental understanding of how contamination works, applied to social systems as readily as biological ones. Knows what an uncontrolled variable looks like. Knows when something has been introduced to a system that doesn't belong.

Becomes a social hub in the killing game — people talk to her, which means she ends up knowing more of what's circulating than almost anyone except Kaori, who collects information differently. They compare notes once, obliquely. Both find it more useful than expected.

PROFILE

Methodical in a way that reads at first as slow. It isn't. It's the pace of someone who has learned that moving faster than her understanding produces errors, and who has decided errors are not acceptable. Thorough, patient, quietly stubborn. Will not move on from a problem until it's resolved.

Makes things that don't exist yet from things that do. Applies this to problems generally. Figures out the mechanism of things from physical evidence before anyone has articulated the question, and then waits while the verbal people catch up. Seems like a supporting character. Is, in the end, one of the most consequential ones. Builds quietly. The things she builds last.
